Paying it ForwardSince its inception in 1864, St. Catherine’s has been firmly committed to extending educational opportunities to as many students as possible. Our school is fortunate to have many parents, friends and alumni who make it possible for us to offer tuition assistance to a great number of families.
A scholarship requires a student application and has specific conditions that each candidate must meet in order to be successful (i.e. a minimum GPA, involvement in extracurricular activities, participation in their home parish, etc.).
The award is made via a competitive review process. Named scholarship awards will be given in increments of $1,000 or more. Donors must make either a gift or a pledge to establish a named scholarship by October 1 of the year preceding the award year.

- Example A: John Smith decides to establish a $2,500 scholarship in memory of his late mother, Betty Smith. John notifies SCHS of this intention in writing on September 1st, 2010. SCHS staff work with John to identify the criteria for the Betty Smith Award. Students apply for the award in the fall of 2010, a winner is announced in the spring of 2011, and an award is made for the 2011-2012 school year.
- Example B: Jane Jones wishes to create a Jones Family Scholarship for excellence in math. She approaches the Development staff with this idea in April of 2011. Staff work with Jane to identify the criteria for the Jones Family Scholarship. Students apply for the award in the fall of 2011, a winner is announced in the spring of 2012, and an award is made for the 2012-2013 school year.
Why does this procedure take so long? In order to streamline both the application process – for our students – and the awards process – for our volunteer readers – St. Catherine’s must have a common application timeline for all scholarships. This means that students apply for scholarships in the fall and their full tuition and aid packages are determined in the spring.
If a donor wishes to specifically support scholarships outside of this timeline, he or she can, at any time of year, contribute to the SCHS Leadership Scholarship. This award recognizes leadership, service and academic excellence. The Leadership Scholarship is also a good option for someone who wants to give to the scholarship program but at a level less than $1,000, which is the required minimum for a named award.
Financial aid is awarded primarily on the basis of need. Other criteria may apply (i.e. preference is given to students from San Juan Diego Middle School), but the principal determinant is always the family’s ability to pay. St. Catherine’s will accept gifts to the financial aid program at any time, in all amounts and with no deadlines.
